It doesn’t take much to create this wonderful rye bread in your bread maker with this recipe that includes cocoa powder for a rich colour.

Ingredients
Serves: 12 

  • 1 cup (250ml) warm water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons treacle
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (280g) plain flour
  • 1 1/2 cups (180g) rye flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon caraway seed
  • 2 teaspoons dried yeast

Directions
Preparation:5min  ›  Cook:3hours  ›  Ready in:3hours5min 

  1. Add ingredients according to the bread machine's manufacturer instructions.
  2. Use the whole wheat and light crust settings.

Altered ingredient amounts. did not use caraway. Had nice light texture, good flavour and nice crust. Served it with corned beef and was a hit. Will be making it again. - 14 Jul 2008

Great taste, but I had trouble in the bread machine, had to remove and knead myself for proper mix. Came out great - 14 Jul 2008

I used this recipe as a guide to make my bread. I omitted the treacle and caraway seed, used wholemeal instead of plain flour, olive oil for my vegetable oil and less brown sugar. I removed the dough from my bread machine once kneaded and put it in a loaf tin instead, with chia seeds on top. Another idea is to use the dough to make small bread rolls instead. - 24 Feb 2015
