Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease and line a 22cm cake tin.
Combine dates and water in saucepan, bring to boil and remove from heat. Stir in bicarbonate of soda and allow to stand for 5 minutes. In a food processor, blend the date mixture with the butter and sugar until almost smooth. Add the eggs and flour and blend again until just combined.
Pour mixture into the prepared tin and cook for about 45 minutes. Allow the cake to stand in the tin for 5 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool.
To make the sauce: combine cream and syrup in saucepan, stir over low heat until warm-don't let it boil.
