Although Christmas comes in our summer, it can be pleasant to serve a traditional warm drink as a nightcap.

Ingredients
Serves: 12 

  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 cup caster sugar
  • 1 small lemon, washed
  • 6 cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 blades of mace
  • 2 bottles fruity red wine
  • 1 cup brandy or rum
  • thin slices of orange and lemon, to decorate

Directions

  1. Pour the water into a large saucepan, add the sugar, the whole lemon and the spices and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1 minute. Pour in the red wine and brandy or rum and heat gently for a few minutes until hot, but not boiling. Strain into a heatproof punch bowl, float the orange and lemon slices on top and serve immediately.
