This was originally a caramel dumplings recipe with refined sugar, which I experimented with to have no refined sugar.

Makes: 14 dumplings

  • Dumplings
  • 1 1/4 cups self raising flour
  • pinch salt
  • 30g butter
  • 1 Fuji apple, grated
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
  • Sauce
  • 30g butter
  • approx 1/3 cup rice malt syrup
  • pinch salt
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:20min  ›  Ready in:35min 

  1. Dumplings: Sift flour and salt into bowl then rub in the butter. Add the grated apple. Add combined milk and vanilla, then mix well.
  2. Sauce: Combine the butter, malt syrup, salt and water in large saucepan, stir constantly until boiling, reduce heat.
  3. To Cook: Drop teaspoons full of dumpling dough into simmering sauce. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Serve with cream.


I made a sugar free ice cream to serve with it also.
