Portuguese Bacalhau (Salt Cod)

This delicious Portuguese dish of Bacalhau, the salted dried cod is soaked overnight, sauteed with onions, thin chips and eggs then garnished with olives to serve.

  • 400g bacalhau (salt cod)
  • 100ml olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 500g shoestring chips, cooked
  • black olives, to garnish

Preparation:30min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Extra time:1day soaking  ›  Ready in:1day1hour 

  1. Soak the cod in water for 24 hours, changing the water once, half way though. After soaking, remove skin then slice into very thin pieces.
  2. In a frying pan, heat the olive oil then saute the onions. Add the cod strips. After 10 minutes add the potatoes and the eggs then mix everything till the eggs are cooked. At the end garnish with the parsley and the olives. Enjoy it!


Bacalhau is also called salt cod or salted cod. You can buy it at most fish markets and if they do not have have it in stock, they can order it for you.
