Roasted Chestnuts

    Why buy roasted chestnuts from the street stand when you can roast your own? They are tastier and healthier!

    Serves: 2 

    • 500g fresh chestnuts
    • 4 tablespoons salad oil
    • 50g sugar
    • 40ml water

    1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. Wash and dry the chestnuts. Cut a slit on the side with the bigger bulge on each chestnut. This is easiest with a serrated knife. Cut only the shell, not the flesh.
    2. Drizzle the oil on the chestnuts and toss well.
    3. Line a baking tray with foil and spread the chestnuts evenly over it. Roast for about 20 minutes.
    4. After 20 minutes the cracks should have opened up. Make a syrup of the sugar and water and brush the chestnuts with it, especially in the cracks. Bake for five more minutes then let cool and enjoy!
