This old fashioned currant loaf has been in my family for years. It is chockablock with currants and seasoned with plenty of mixed spice.

The Walters

Makes: 1 loaf

  • 1 cup (130g) flour
  • 3 teaspoons cream of tart1r
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons bicarb soda
  • 2 teaspoons mixed spice
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 cup (100g) currants
  • 1 cup milk

Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:1hour 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. Sift flour, cream of tartar and bicarb soda. Add spice and sugar. Rub in butter then add currants. Mix as for scones.
  3. Put in a greased, floured tin then put a lit on. Bake in preheated oven until the crust is brown all over, 30-45 minutes.
