These basic scones have only butter, flour, sugar, salt and milk. Baked until golden, they are best served with butter and jam. Top with anything you're keen on.

Serves: 9

  • 50g unsalted butter
  • 200g self raising flour
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • pinch salt, to taste
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) milk

Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:15min  ›  Ready in:30min

  1. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Rub the butter into the flour, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and salt.
  2. Make a well in the centre of the mix and stir in the milk. Stir until the mixture is even and the dough comes together. Turn out onto a floured surface then shape into a rough square about 3-4cm thick.
  3. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Brush all over with milk and score into nine rough squares. Bake for 15 minutes until golden and cooked though. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or cold.

really good scones made this with my granny - 04 Apr 2014

I just made these and I thought they were awesome, and with less fat too because it doesn't have the cream usually in other recipes. I only baked them for 7 minutes though and they were done already. I think overbaking can cause dryness. - 31 Jul 2015

I only baked for about 7 minutes and they were done, although that could be my oven being ornery. Otherwise, they were fantastic. - 30 May 2016
