Nothing fancy - just delicious, melt in your mouth rolls made from simple ingredients.

Serves: 24 

  • 4 1/2 cups (560g) plain flour
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried instant yeast
  • 60g butter or margarine, melted
  • 375ml (1 1/2 cups) cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Preparation:25min  ›  Cook:12min  ›  Extra time:1hour40min rising  ›  Ready in:2hours17min 

  1. Mix together flour, sugar, salt and instant yeast. Mix in butter, then the water.
  2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for 20 minutes. Cover dough with oil. Place dough in a bowl, cover and proof for 1 hour.
  3. Form into 24 rolls, and place on a greased baking tray. Prove for 45 minutes.
  4. Bake at 200 degrees C for 12 to 14 minutes until golden and firm to touch.

I'm confused. ready in 53mins. 20 min knead, 1 hour prove, 45min prove 12-14 min cook. more like 2 hrs. Mine then turned out like tennis ball size rocks. Very dissapointed. what did I do wrong, only thought is yeast was old - 25 Dec 2012

Took shortcuts. really good and easy. even the kids helped make the rolls. I used a breadmaker for the kneading part. - 14 Jul 2008
