Coconut Chocolate Bars for a Crowd

    This recipe makes a very large batch of layer bars with coconut, walnut, chocolate and condensed milk. Great for cake stalls or food gifts.

    Makes: 96 bars

    • 500g melted butter
    • 6 cups sweet biscuit crumbs
    • 3 (395g) tins sweetened condensed milk
    • 3 cups dark chocolate chips
    • 3 2/3 cups shredded coconut
    • 2 1/2 cups chopped walnuts

    Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:45min 

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
    2. Combine the biscuit crumbs and melted butter, mix well and press mixture into the bottom of one large baking pan. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the crust. Layer the chocolate chips, coconut and nuts on top. Press down gently.
    3. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly brown. Let cool completely before cutting into squares.

    I've been making these for years...They are much better when you layer as follows: melted butter, sprinkle crushed crackers next, chocolate chips, walnuts, coconut & save the sweetened milk for Last.     The came out terrible. Even the guys at work did not eat them. There was no balance between the ingredients - too much crust, not enough chocolate. Parts were so hard they ended up going out to the birds. I was very careful in following the recipe, since this was the first time I had made them.
