It might seem unusual to bake steaks for two hours but this is a great way to serve a less expensive cut of meat. Goes great with mashed potatoes and green beans.

Serves: 4

  • 1 cup (125g) plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 500g beef round steaks, tenderised
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) olive oil
  • 2 cups (500ml) beef stock

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. Mix the flour, black pepper, seasoned salt and garlic powder together in a shallow bowl then coat the steaks thoroughly with the flour mixture. Retain 3 tablespoons of seasoned flour.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a frypan over medium heat and pan-fry the steaks until golden brown on both sides; about 5 minutes per side.
  4. Place the steaks into a 20x25cm baking dish. Whisk the retained seasoned flour into the beef stock until smooth and pour the stock over the steaks. Cover the dish with aluminium foil.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until the meat is tender and the gravy has thickened; about 2 hours.
