Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease and flour a 22x32cm cake tin.
Sift together the flour, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy using an electric mixer set on medium speed. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Blend in the vanilla essence. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the stewed apples.
Pour the batter into a 20x30cm baking dish. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips. Bake at 180 degrees C for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the cake tin on a cake rack.
This is a great cake. I had only a bit over a cup of apple so used part milk and the apple taste was perfect, as was the texture. Also there was a whole lot of mixture so I used the cake tin specified and half a dozen muffins too. My family of four ate the whole lot in under two days. Try it for a pudding, just warm with a bit of cream. - 07 Feb 2013
Just made this cake - it is quick and easy and tasts geat. Made for moning tea with friends - they all loved it. I had to make up the apple and thought it may have been a little warm when I added it - didn't matter, worked anyway. Cheers for the recipe. - 06 Feb 2013
