Apple, Chocolate and Walnut Bars

Perfect for a midday snack these homemade bars containing stewed apple, chocolate and walnuts are quick and easy to make.

Serves: 48 

  • 60g dark chocolate, diced
  • 1 cup (125g) plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/4 cups (280g) white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup stewed apple
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease a 23x33cm cake tin.
  2. Melt chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir frequently until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time stirring constantly until well blended.
  4. In a separate bowl mix together the stewed apples, melted chocolate and vanilla. Add to the egg mixture stirring until smooth.
  5. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt then gradually stir into the batter. Fold in chopped walnuts.
  6. Spread evenly into the prepared cake tin.
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of cake comes out clean. Let cool in tin before cutting.
