This is not your ordinary popcorn; Christmas is a time for overindulgence so why not sweeten up the popcorn too. I let my nieces and nephews eat it and have even been known to put it in a bag with a fancy ribbon for a gift.

Serves: 8 

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup pop corn kernels
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup golden syrup
  • 1 packet tiny teddy biscuits (Your choice but probably not chocolate coated)
  • 1/2 cup red and green smarties, M&Ms or skittles

  1. Make the popcorn: Put oil in a saucepan until hot then add the corn kernels. Cover and let pop shaking from time to time. Place in a bowl and sprinkle with salt. Set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 120 degrees C.
  3. Make sugar coating: Combine sugar, butter and golden syrup in a saucepan and heat while stirring. Boil the mixture for five minutes.
  4. Coat the popcorn: Tip the sugar syrup over the popcorn and stir to cover.
  5. Toast the popcorn: Line a few baking trays with foil then grease. Place a thin layer of popcorn over the trays and put in the oven. Cook for 1 hour turning every 15 minutes so it doesn't stick.
  6. Cool and Serve: Cool the popcorn, the popcorn should have a non-sticky sweet layer. Combine with tinny teddies and smarties to create a festive feeling. Serve in a bowl or gift wrap.
