Spicy Almond Heart Biscuits

    These are delicious buttery biscuits that are perfect for Christmas or Valentine's Day. They are crunchy, sweet and lightly spiced with cinnamon and aniseed.

    Serves: 40 

    • For the Biscuits
    • 1 1/4 cups (155g) plain flour
    • 1/2 cup (125g) caster sugar
    • 25g honey
    • 65g butter
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 1 pinch salt
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground aniseed
    • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
    • For the Icing
    • 1 egg white
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
    • 1 tablespoon icing sugar
    • 100g slivered almonds

    1. Using an electric mixer with a dough hook, knead all the biscuit ingredients into a dough. Cover and chill for 3 hours.
    2. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
    3. Cut the dough into four portions and roll them out. Cut 10 heart shaped biscuits from each and transfer to the prepared tray.
    4. Beat egg white until stiff and add the honey, vanilla sugar and icing sugar. Fold in almonds. Place some of the icing on each heart and smooth out.
    5. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
