    These are an interesting take on the normal salty pretzel. Of course you can also just roll out the dough and cut out any shapes you prefer.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 110 

    • 4 cups (500g) plain flour
    • 1 1/4 cups (250g) caster sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
    • 1 pinch baking powder
    • 250g butter, diced
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • Icing
    • 1/2 cup (90g) icing sugar;
    • 2 tablespoons rum

    Directions

    1. Sift flour into a bowl and mix in the sugar, vanilla sugar and baking powder. Form a hollow in the centre and pour in the eggs.
    2. Add the butter and work into a smooth dough. Wrap dough in cling wrap and chill for 1 hour.
    3. Preheat oven to 180 C.
    4. Shape dough into a long roll. Cut into 1cm thick slices and shape each piece into a pencil-thin roll. Shape into small pretzels and place on a greased baking tray. Bake for 18-20 minutes in preheated oven. Allow to cool.
    5. Icing: Stir icing sugar with rum and brush pretzels with it.
