Stir Fried Spicy Cabbage

    Although I got this recipe from a vegetarian friend it has become a popular side dish in my house. Adjust the dried chillies and Szechuan peppercorns to your tastes.

    Serves: 2 

    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon vegetable or chicken stock powder
    • 2 tablespoons oil
    • 5 dried red chillies
    • 5 Szechuan peppercorns
    • 1 teaspoon finely diced spring onion
    • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
    • 1/2 whole cabbage, leaves torn into bite sized pieces

    1. In a small bowl make a sauce by mixing together the salt, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar and vegetable stock powder.
    2. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a wok over medium heat and stir fry the dried chillies for 1 minute.
    3. Add the Szechuan peppercorns and fry until fragrant; about 30 seconds then set aside.
    4. Stir fry the spring onion and ginger until fragrant. Add the cabbage and stir fry for 2 minutes or until tender but still a little crunchy.
    5. Add the sauce and toss well. Garnish with fried chillies and peppercorns then serve.


    Rice vinegar and Szechuan peppercorns can be purchased in Asian speciality shops.

    Simple, and using a combo of red and green cabbage makes it interesting and colourful  -  25 May 2011


    Used different ingredients. Didn't add the onion, and used fresh chillies. Easy!  -  25 May 2011
