This is a simple and delicious way to prepare fillet of beef - pan fried and served with garlic butter. Rice, potatoes or pasta make an excellent accompaniment.

Serves: 4

  • 450g fillet of beef, about 1-2cm thick, cut into chunks
  • 3 tablespoon caster sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons Japanese soy sauce (tamari)
  • 1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornflour
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely sliced
  • salt, to taste

Preparation:10min  ›  Cook:8min  ›  Extra time:20min marinating  ›  Ready in:38min

  1. Sprinkle the steak with sugar, toss to coat and let sit for 20 minutes.
  2. Add soy sauce, 1 teaspoon oil and cornflour to the steak and stir to mix.
  3. In a large frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon oil over high heat. Stir fry until medium done, about 3-5 minutes. The cooking time will depend on the thickness of the steak and your preference. Set aside.
  4. Heat the same frying pan with butter and saute the garlic until fragrant, about 2-3 minutes. Add the steak and salt to taste, stir well and serve.
