Sausage Toad in the Hole

    This is a simple family favourite that is easy and cheap to make. Sausages are cooked in a plain batter, the resulting cake is cut and served hot with vegetables and gravy.

    Serves: 4 

    • 15g butter
    • 450g pork sausages
    • 1 cup (115g) flour
    • salt, to taste
    • 1 egg, whisked
    • 300ml milk

    Preparation:10min  ›  Cook:40min  ›  Extra time:10min resting  ›  Ready in:1hour 

    1. Preheat the over to 200 degrees C.
    2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl.
    3. Beat in the egg and gradually add enough milk to form a stiff batter. Set aside for 10 minutes. Add the remaining milk, stirring constantly.
    4. Melt the butter in an ovenproof dish then add the sausages. Put them into the oven for 10 minutes, or until evenly browned.
    5. Pour the batter over the sausages then bake for 30 minutes or until the batter is golden brown and has risen.
    6. Place the dish in an oven at 180 degrees C for 10 minutes or until evenly browned.
