Oaty plum crumble

    Poached fresh plums are given a golden topping of crunchy oats, chopped nuts mixed spices and brown sugar, then baked in the oven to make a comforting family treat.

    Serves: 4 

    • 1 kg plums, firm but ripe
    • ½ cup caster sugar
    • 3 tablespoons (60g) unsalted butter
    • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
    • ¾ cup rolled oats
    • 1/3 cup (60g) brown sugar
    • ½ cup mixed chopped nuts
    • To serve: whipped cream or ice cream

    1. Preheat the oven to 230°C. Halve the plums and remove the stones. If the plums are large, cut into quarters.
    2. Put the plums, the caster sugar and 2–3 tablespoons water into a pot. Cover and poach over moderate heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the plums begin to soften. Transfer the plums to an ovenproof dish about 20 cm in diameter and 5 cm deep.
    3. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a frying pan, then stir in the mixed spice, rolled oats, brown sugar and chopped nuts.
    4. Spoon the mixture evenly over the top of the plums. Put the dish into the oven and bake for 12–15 minutes, checking regularly, until the oats are golden brown.
    5. Serve the crumble straight from the cdish, hot or warm, with whipped cream or ice cream.

    This recipe was easy to make and totally delicious! I used tinned plums which worked well and made it with walnuts. A big hit with all members of the family.  -  25 Aug 2015
