Beer Battered Fish and Chips

    Fish and chips with a twist: a simple two-ingredient beer batter and battered chips as well as the battered fish. Don't forget the tartare sauce.

    Serves: 2 

    • 1 cup (125g) plain flour
    • 300ml beer
    • vegetable oil, for frying
    • 4 potatoes , peeled and cut into chips or wedges
    • 2 skinless boneless fish fillets cut into large pieces
    • 1 lemon
    • For the tartare sauce
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    • 2 tablespoons sour cream
    • 2 gherkins finely chopped
    • 1 tablespoon capers, rinsed and finely chopped
    • 1 tablespoon dill, finely chopped
    • salt and pepper

    1. To make the tartare sauce, in a small bowl combine all ingredients - mayonnaise, sour cream, gherkins, capers, dill; season to taste.
    2. To make the batter, sift flour in large bowl. Make a well in centre of flour. Gradually whisk in beer until batter is smooth or use a hand blender if preferred. Set aside.
    3. Dust each piece of fish and potato in plain flour and dip into batter mixture and deep fry in small batches for 5-10 mins.
    4. Remove drain on paper towel on large plate serve with lemon wedges and tartare sauce.

    Used different ingredients. Didn't use this tartare sauce recipe, but another from; 120ml mayo, 5ml lemon juice, 20g diced onion and 20g diced gherkin- easy and tasty.  -  28 May 2010


    This was really easy to prepare and cook, and tasted great. I'd not battered chips before, so I battered some potato, and just cooked others normally. Both were good. Next time I might add some dried herbs to the batter. I had 500g of fish and it easily served 4 people.  -  28 May 2010


    Far too greasy for me, although I admit I enjoyed the battered sliced potato. Maybe some fresh salad to go with it would ease the cholestorol intake?  -  16 Sep 2010
