A delicious, cold, homemade ham and beef sausage was (and still is) a great country standby for family picnics and the picnic races. Serve it, thinly sliced, with potato salad and other salads.

This tart is traditionally baked by Alsatian bakers on the bottom of their bread ovens. As the bacon fat drips onto the oven floor, it catches fire—hence the name—producing a deep, smoky flavour.

Perfect for feeding a crowd at a summer barbecue, this is a tasty twist on the classic American recipe for baked beans. The variety of beans used gives the dish great flavour, along with the streaky bacon. Try this for a break from the ordinary. If you don't have French's mustard to hand, substitute half a tablespoon of English mustard.

I started making this dish a few years ago after apple picking with my children. I was looking for something different to do with some of the apples and this turned out to be delicious! We all enjoy it and hope your family does too.

Made from thinly sliced pork fillet, fresh ginger, spring onions and Chinese noodles. It is quick and easy to prepare, and makes a great first course for a dinner party.

I made this by accident one night! It was meant to be fried rice but instead of using overnight rice (the best rice to make fried rice as the texture is drier), I had instead used freshly steamed rice which was moist and fluffy

Sautéed asparagus, pancetta and rocket tossed in pasta with rocket and lemon juice make a simple flavourful dinner with minimal cooking. I often use spaghetti for this and you can substitute any pasta. Serve with grated parmesan if liked.

A yummy twist on the old fashioned toasted cheese sandwich. My aunt used to make these for me for lunch when I spent the summers with her.

This is the classic pie to take on a picnic. Carry it in the plate it was baked in, well-wrapped in a tea towel and several layers of newspaper to keep it warm.

Dried apricots moistened with freshly squeezed orange juice, then wrapped in bacon rashers and grilled until hot make a tasty snack to pass round with drinks.

This is a wonderfully simple chunky soup. I use good quality bacon. It tastes equally good made with pancetta. The dark green colour of the cabbage alongside the tomatoes gives the soup a beautiful colour.

The salty-sour taste of sauerkraut marries well with the smoked bacon in this crispy strudel. This hearty dish is ideal for the cooler months.

When I was in university, I created this delicious pasta dish using my favourite cheap ingredients, bacon, button mushrooms and garlic.

A rich source of B vitamins and protein, ham is surprisingly low in fat. The sodium content can be quite high, however, but reduced-sodium hams are available.

Long before turkey became a Christmas dinner institution, there was baked ham. The ham can be prepared for glazing the day before, then covered and refrigerated.

An exciting blend of pork, vegetables and spices is sealed inside wrappers, then baked until crisp. Delicious and crunchy without deep frying!

Asian ingredients give these barbecued chops loads of flavour. They can also be put in the oven and grilled.

This is an excellent dish for a summer barbecue party. Prepare the ribs in advance, and when your guests have arrived, finish them off on the barbecue. You'll have them wondering how they got so tender and tasty so fast.
