Kolache are Czech biscuits traditionally made with a yeast dough and fruit filling. In this version a non-yeasted dough is used.

An Eastern European dish of deep fried bread rubbed in garlic. The Aussie twist - about 1/2 a tinny of West End Draught!! Serve with soup or stew or have on own as a snack.

The salty-sour taste of sauerkraut marries well with the smoked bacon in this crispy strudel. This hearty dish is ideal for the cooler months.

A basic recipe to which you can add your own choice of fresh herbs. Use in soups and rich stews.

This is a yummy, flourless, fail proof chocolate cake - the base and the filling are the same: one is baked while the other is just chilled. Use fresh eggs and good quality chocolate - preferably with 70% cocoa, and don't over bake the base.

These little Russian pancakes have a deliciously distinctive flavour thanks to the buckwheat flour. Try them topped with a spoonful of your favourite dip.

Austria's famous melt-in-the-mouth pastry looks very impressive, but is surprisingly easy to make. Ground almonds and breadcrumbs absorb the juice from the cherries, so the layers of filo pastry bake wonderfully light and crisp.

This is the easiest quick meal I know! If you can chop an onion this is the recipe for you. You can change the spices around to your own taste, I make this with garlic and mixed Italian herbs sometimes and it works out just great. This travels well cold so it's a good choice to bring to a BBQ.

Tinned beetroot is great for this recipe, making it ready in minutes. You can save the juice, freeze it and add it in place of the chilled water or ice. Try serving with a dollop of soured cream.

Serve this ruby-red and intensely flavoured soup as a starter or light lunch with slices of rye bread. For extra visual appeal, swirl with sour cream before serving.

This recipe is the next best thing to a bakery babka! Although babkas are traditionally yeast-risen breads, this one is more similar to a sweet quick bread or cake.

Here's a healthy version of borscht, the Eastern European beetroot soup. The beetroot are full of folate and vitamin C, and the potatoes contribute vitamins C and B6.

Haroset is a traditional Jewish Passover dish. This haroset recipe is more of a sweet, and very different from the typical apple based variety. It can be stored in the refrigerator for one week in an air-tight container.

Easy and delicious. a great way to use up your egg yolks and have something friendly for the kids while you enjoying a more adult desert.

This rich meal-in-a-bowl combines beef with vegetables and dumplings and the three essential ingredients of an authentic goulash – paprika, onions and caraway seeds. Serve with boiled or steamed potatoes and settle in for the night.

This is my grandmother's recipe. Beef is slowly cooked until tender, with sour cream added at the end to create a luscious gravy. Serve with plenty of bread to mop up the gravy.

This is a traditional walnut roll which is made by many Hungarians at Christmas and Easter as a special treat. This recipe has been handed down in my family for generations. The preparation time is around 70 mins, plus 1 hr 30 minutes resting time, but is well worth the effort!
