American Navajo Taco

    This is a basic fry bread recipe. It's is great with honey and butter. The Navajos put chillis, cheese, onion, lettuce, beans, and seasoned mince on it, and call them Navajo Tacos.

    Serves: 9 

    • 475ml oil for frying
    • 500g plain flour
    • 30g baking powder
    • 12g salt
    • 500 ml warm milk

    1. In a large heavy bottomed frying pan, heat about 2cm of vegetable oil or lard to 185 degrees C.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and milk; mix well. When the dough has pulled together, form it into small balls and pat them flat.
    3. Place 3 or 4 at a time into the hot oil. When the rounds begin to bubble, flip them over and cook until golden. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
