Baked Apple Roly Poly

    This recipe was made by my grandmother in the 30's. She was bought up in Jarradale, a timber town near Perth.

    Serves: 6 

    • 1 cup plain flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • pinch of salt
    • 6 tablespoons (120g) butter
    • milk to make dough (start with 1/4 cup)
    • 2 apples peeled and sliced
    • 1 tablespoon sultanas
    • 1 tablespoon chopped mixed peel
    • 1 good teaspoon mixed spice
    • For the sauce
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 3/4 cup Water

    Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:1hour 

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Mix cup of plain flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder and a pinch of salt in a mixing bowl and rub in 1 tablespoon of butter.
    2. Mix with enough milk to make scone-type dough (i.e. sticky). Roll out lightly to about 20x30cm.
    3. Put apples, sultanas, peel and spice all over and roll up. Place in deep dish and pour over the hot sauce. Place in oven.
    4. Bake about 3/4-1 hour in moderate oven.
    5. To make sauce: Put tablespoon butter, sugar and 3/4 cup water in saucepan and bring to the boil.

    I struggled to stretch the dough to 20cm and it was very thin when I did manage it. I was dissapointed in the finished dessert and so were my sons.  -  03 Jun 2009
