    A variety of ingredients are used to create the oldschool baked beans for a winters night!

    Serves: 10 

    • 500g (2 1/2 cups) haricot beans, soaked in water overnight
    • 1 (400g) tin crushed tomatoes
    • 3 rashers bacon
    • 3 tablespoons molasses
    • 3 tablespoons soft brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon mustard powder or mustard
    • 3 cups (750ml) water
    • 1 tablespoon sea salt
    • Generous grind of black pepper

    Preparation:6hours  ›  Cook:7hours  ›  Ready in:13hours 

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
    2. Combine the crushed tomatoes, molasses, soft brown sugar, mustard powder or mustard, water, salt and pepper in a medium saucepan. Bring to the boil and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and set aside.
    3. Finely slice bacon and put into a large casserole dish. Drain the haricot beans and add them to the dish. Add the tomato mixture, stir to combine and then cover.
    4. Bake for 6 hours.Check every hour to ensure there is enough liquid around the beans and add water if necessary.

    Something else. Sorry it's not 6 hours prep! More like 30-60 minutes! The cooking time is 6 hours!  -  12 May 2009
