Orietta's Chocolate Cake

    If you don't take kindly to recipes that instruct you to "cream the butter and sugar" then this one's for you! Prepare this cake batter on the stove top...it's my Aunty Orietta's classic chocolate cake recipe. Delicious!

    Serves: 12 

    • 1 cup (250ml) water
    • 1 cup (220g) white sugar
    • 125g butter or margarine
    • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon bi carb soda
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 1/2 cups (225g) self-raising flour

    Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:55min  ›  Extra time:30min cooling  ›  Ready in:1hour40min 

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease and flour a casserole or pyrex dish (28x18cm or 23x23cm).
    2. Combine the water, sugar, butter, cocoa and bi carb in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir well and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour into a mixing bowl and cool.
    3. Whisk in eggs and flour until combined.
    4. Pour batter into prepared dish. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes or until a skewers comes out clean.
    5. Cool. Cover with chocolate icing and sprinkles or a simple dusting of icing sugar.

    This cake is so easy to make, and turned out very nice. I did the first step last thing at night, then finished making the cake the next morning. Too easy!! Only gave the cake 4 stars as it is not as good as the One Bowl Easy Chocolate Cake on this site, but it is more economical.  -  09 Jul 2009
