In a bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, mixed spice and sugar. Rub in butter until mixture looks like fine crumbs then stir in the dates.
In a bowl mix together the milk and egg then pour add in four batches to the flour mixture until it starts to come together.
Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until a soft dough has formed.
Using a round cutter, cut as many scones as you can out of the dough. Brush each with milk then place on a tray and into the hot oven.
Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until just beginning to brown.
