These traditional light and fluffy scones are sweetened with the richness of the dates. They only take 1/2 an hour in total to make from scratch!

  • 2 cups self raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup diced dates
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. In a bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, mixed spice and sugar. Rub in butter until mixture looks like fine crumbs then stir in the dates.
  3. In a bowl mix together the milk and egg then pour add in four batches to the flour mixture until it starts to come together.
  4. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until a soft dough has formed.
  5. Using a round cutter, cut as many scones as you can out of the dough. Brush each with milk then place on a tray and into the hot oven.
  6. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until just beginning to brown.
