This is an original old family secret recipe that many have tried to copy. It is very simple and very delicious.


Serves: 4 

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 2 teaspoons dry chicken stock
  • 500g beef minced or cubed
  • 2 teaspoons garlic
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 cups finely sliced mushrooms
  • 3-4 large potatoes, thinly sliced with skin on
  • 250g shrimps or 10 large prawns
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) water
  • 1 cup (250ml) thickened cream
  • 1 teaspoon mustard, dijon the best
  • 1 capsicum, finely diced
  • 1 cup favourite cheese

  1. Heat oil then place beef into frypan with cumin, thyme, chicken stock and garlic.
  2. Cook until slightly brown then place in baking dish.
  3. Fry the onions and mushrooms in a frypan and cook until tender.
  4. Once cooked place onions and mushrooms with meat and seasonings in baking dish.
  5. Place one layer of thinly slice potatoes over meat, mushrooms and onion then arrange prawns or shrimp over the top of potatoes. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.
  6. Then place another layer of potato. Mix water, cream and mustard together then pour over. Place the finely diced capsicum on top then sprinkle remainder of parmesan and your favourite cheese.
  7. Cover with foil then bake in preheated oven 180 degrees C for 1 hour. Remove foil and cook for another 10 minutes or until top is a golden brown. Serve.
