Mum's Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's pie is one of our family favourites in winter. It is very filling and ideal to be served with warm bread or toast.


Serves: 4 

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 500g beef mince
  • 2 medium carrots, grated
  • 1 parsnip, grated
  • 1 large stick celery, finely sliced
  • 1 beef stock cube, crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 3 tablespoons tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons worstershire sauce, optional
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Preparation:20min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:50min 

  1. Peel and quarter potatoes. Boil until tender then mash and set aside.
  2. Brown mince in a large saucepan. Add grated and sliced vegetables then cook for 5-10 minutes or until softened slightly.
  3. Add stock cubes, flour, water, sauces and seasonings.
  4. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Pour mixture into a ungreased casserole dish and top with mashed potato. Add a few dollops of butter on the top.
  6. Bake at 180 degrees C for 30 minutes or until the top forms a nice brown crust.
