Spicy Beetroot Chutney

Beetroot is not for everyone but this recipe might change a few minds! I like to serve it with lamb burgers and garlic aioli.


Serves: 4 

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 red onion, diced
  • 500g beetroot peeled and diced (make sure you wear gloves during this stage)
  • 400g tin crushed tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon of coriander seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoons of caraway seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3/4 cup water

Preparation:30min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:1hour 

  1. Heat oil. Add onion and beetroot and cook for 5 minutes.
  2. Add tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, coriander seeds, ground cloves, bay leaf, caraway seeds and 3/4 cup water. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes or till most of the liquid has evaporated.
  3. Serve cold or warm.
