Indonesian Satay Sauce

A good peanut sauce is the key to a good satay. Serve it with skewers of tofu, lamb, chicken or beef, or just as a sauce for fried rice.


Serves: 4 

  • 1 small onion
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 30g dark brown sugar
  • 20 ml ketjap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 stalk lemongrass (crushed)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon peanut oil
  • 1 teaspoon sambal oelek (chilli sauce)
  • coconut milk or water

Preparation:5min  ›  Cook:10min  ›  Ready in:15min 

  1. Finely dice the small onion. Fry in oil until softened, then add all other ingredients except coconut milk/water.
  2. Slowly heat on low flame adding liquid as required while constantly stirring to make it into a smooth sauce.
  3. Remove lemongrass before serving.
