This is a popular snack in France known as a croque madame (if you omit the egg, it's a croque monsieur). Perfect for breakfast or lunch.

Chef Alyssa Engle

Ingredients
Serves: 1

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 2 thick slices white bread
  • 2 slices ham
  • 1 egg

Directions
Preparation:5min  ›  Cook:10min  ›  Ready in:15min

  1. Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Mix in the cheese once it is melted. Dip each slice of bread into the melted cheese, coating both sides.
  2. Heat a frypan over medium heat. Place one slice of bread into the skillet and top with 2 slices of ham. Place the second piece of bread on top. Fry until golden on each side, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Fry the egg in the hot frypan to your liking: easy, medium, or well done. Place the fried egg on top of the sandwich and serve.

Very tasty and so easy! Just make sure everything you are serving the sandwich with is ready as it cooks so quick! Will definitely make again and again! - 29 Jul 2012

This variant is close to the classic CM, however to reduce the fat content and expand the flavour profile, use sliced Gouda or Edam cheese with a mere smear of Dijon Mustard beneath the good quality ham slices. This item is easy to prepare and consume on a regular basis in our humble household. - 06 Feb 2016
