This is a really nice moist tea loaf and can be served hot or cold with butter or cheese. I've made this for years.

    Ingredients

    • 1 kg self raising flour
    • 500g margarine
    • 500g plums
    • 250g mixed peel
    • 2 teaspoon mixed spice
    • 500g white sugar
    • 4 large eggs
    • 1/2 cup (125ml) coffee
    • milk

    Directions
    Preparation:1hour  ›  Cook:3hours  ›  Ready in:4hours

    1. To a large bowl add the flour and margarine and rub together until they resemble fine breadcrumbs.
    2. Add the plums, mixed peel, mixed spice and sugar to the bowl and mix well.
    3. In a measuring jug add the 4 eggs and coffee and beat well, then add milk to make it up to 600ml.
    4. Add the milk egg and coffee mix to the dry ingredients a little at a time until the mixture is smooth.
    5. Preheat oven to 140 degrees C.
    6. Line 3 loaf tins with greaseproof paper and divide the mixture equally between the tins.
    7. Bake in the centre of the oven for 3-4 hours until the tops feel firm. Leave in the tin until cooled as the loaves tend to break if you remove them warm.

This is a cake. There is not any yeast in it.  -  10 Mar 2013  (Review from Allrecipes UK & Ireland)

Made this today and just had a warm slice with butter and chedder cheese, many thanks it made three of the larger loaf tins and i did have to use a standard oven so the tops were slightly overdone, i will adjust this next time, it is not the recipie it is my oven at fault. Flavour wise this is spot on and reminds me of the loaves my grandmother used to make!  -  17 Dec 2011  (Review from Allrecipes UK & Ireland)
