Peppermint Brandy Liqueur

    20 minutes

This is a very old recipe from the Cape of South Africa for peppermint liqueur and is very refreshing in summer.

    3 people made this

    Serves: 24

    • 1 1/4 cups white sugar
    • 1 1/4 cups water
    • 2 1/2 cups brandy
    • 3 drops peppermint oil
    • 3 drops green food coloring

    1. Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve the sugar, making a thick syrup.

As a South African I am familiar with what this should taste like and it is close, but not quite. The sugar syrup should be a 2:1 sugar:water mix and should be double this quantity as this is usually a thick and syrupy liqueur. I ended up using 3 cups of sugar to 1 1/2 cups of water. With that amendment it was spot on.  -  23 Dec 2009  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)
