Cut Swiss roll into 8 slices. Arrange four slices on the bottom of a serving dish. Strain the mandarins and reserve the juice.
Drizzle half the juice over the Swiss roll in the serving dish, then top with half the mandarins. Pour over 1 cup of the custard.
Repeat with another layer of Swiss roll, juice and mandarin segments. Store in the refrigerator and top with whipped cream just before serving (optional).
