Wholemeal Chapati Bread

This is a version of the Indian bread made from wholemeal flour. I make this for my husband all the time - he's diabetic.


Serves: 4 

  • 1 cup (125g) wholemeal flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons water

Preparation:10min  ›  Cook:2min  ›  Ready in:12min 

  1. Sift together flour and salt in a bowl. Stir in olive oil and water, and then knead until firm and elastic. Divide into four balls, and roll as flat as possible with a rolling pin.
  2. Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the chapati on both sides until golden brown, about 1 minute per side. If desired, sprinkle with additional olive oil before serving.

I am having trouble making these perfect. I followed the recipe but my bread turn out hard and I couldn't roll it round like the picture provided. It doesn't puff up as well. What did I do wrong? - 12 Jan 2015


These are so quick and easy, and I often make a similar recipe but with refined flour, and I often cook the chapattis on a hot barbecue. Never thought to use wholemeal flour, but it is good - very tasty and just that bit better for you. Country Frog - 15 Jul 2013
