Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease a 1.5-litre (6-cup) capacity ovenproof dish.
Combine the apples, 1/4 cup caster sugar and 2 tablespoons water in a medium saucepan. Cover the pan and cook over a low heat for 8-10 minutes or until the apples start to soften and release their juices. Remove from the heat. Cool for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, combine the flours, brown sugar and remaining caster sugar in a large bowl. Add butter. Using your fingertips, rub butter into flour mixture until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the almonds.
Stir the berries into the apple mixture. Spoon fruit into prepared dish. Sprinkle crumble over fruit mixture. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until crumble is golden brown. Serve with thick cream.
