    Yes I've been through every gadget on the market for making coffee over the years, from percolators to filter makers to bodums to espresso machines. They were fashionable and desirable at the time, cost me a fortune, did not impress me, were too much paraphernalia to use and clean and all conked out or fell by the wayside. Then I remembered how my mother used to make coffee in the 1950s, before the days of instant coffee and machines from ground coffee in a saucepan on the stove! So much simpler, easier and nicer. So I'm rolling back the years and hopefully your eyes with this simple recipe. This recipe is for 1 mug of coffee. Multiply the quantity according to numbers.

    Ingredients
    Makes: 1 mug coffee

    • 1 tablespoon (about 7g) coffee beans or ground coffee of your choice
    • 1/2 mug water
    • 1/2 mug milk

    1. Grind the coffee in a grinder or pestle and mortar, if not already ground.
    2. Add the ground coffee to the water in a saucepan on the hob, and bring to simmer point stirring or swirling it around while heating. Do not allow it to boil. This should take 2 to 3 minutes.
    3. Place the mug containing the milk into the microwave and heat on high for 1 minute or heat in a pan if you prefer. Do not allow to boil.
    4. Blend or whisk the heated milk to produce a frothy foam for latte. Best to do this in a small bowl rather than the mug. I confess to using a gadget for this but you can do it with a hand whisk.
    5. Filter the brewed coffee through muslin or purpose-made filter paper into the mug used for heating the milk or into a preheated mug.
    6. Add the foamy milk, reserving the thick foam for the top.

    Tip

    Washing up is a cinch! I actually keep the same saucepan for coffee and rinse out with water before use. This method of making coffee is liberating! You simply don't need all those machines!
