Baked French Toast Dessert

    Make this in the morning and cook and serve it at night. Yummy french toast bake with a toffee like base. Served with banana and a drizzle of caramel and you have a delightful dessert.

    Serves: 6 

    • 113g melted butter
    • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1 heaped teaspoon cinnamon
    • 4 eggs, beaten
    • 1 1/2 cups milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 loaf of thickly sliced bread
    • 2 heaped teaspoons cinnamon, for sprinkling

    1. Lightly grease 22 x 33cm oven proof dish.
    2. Melt the butter in microwave, add brown sugar and the heaped teaspoon cinnamon. Stir until well mixed. Spread the sugar mix evenly across bottom of prepared dish.
    3. In a jug beat the eggs, milk and vanilla together.
    4. Place single slices of bread over the sugar mix in dish, then pour half of the egg mixture over the bread layer and sprinkle 1 heaped teaspoon cinnamon over top.
    5. Add another layer of sliced bread and pour over remaining egg mixture. sprinkle with remaining cinnamon. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.
    6. When ready, cover with foil and bake at 180 degrees C for 30 minutes. Uncover and cook for another 15 minutes.
    7. Sprinkle with icing sugar and let sit for 5 minutes. Serve warm with sliced banana, a drizzle of caramel sauce (or topping) and cream.
