Home Made Meat Pie

A basic meat pie with a thick shortcrust top. Hearty winter meal. Ready in just over an hour.

Makes: 1 pie

  • oil, to brown beef
  • 1 kg gravy beef, diced
  • 1 brown onion, diced
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 small potatoes, diced into 2cm cubes
  • 1 litre beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon seedless mustard
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • bunch of fresh parsley, chopped finely
  • shortcrust pastry, as needed
  • 2 tablespoons milk for topping of pastry

Preparation:20min  ›  Cook:1hour10min  ›  Ready in:1hour30min 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. Heat small amount of oil in a large pan and brown beef and onion.
  3. Add flour, carrots, potatoes, stock, mustard and tomato paste then simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Add parsley and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  5. Pour into pie dish and cover with my home made short crust pastry (see my other recipes). Brush with milk.
  6. Bake in oven for approximately 45 - 55 minutes depending on your oven and checking as the time nears. Crust should be a nice golden brown.

Super delicious pie, but the filling was a tad watery so I doubled the flour before pouring into the base. I also added a dash of Worcestershire sauce with the broth. Makes a super-yum pie! - 20 Jul 2015
