Place the split peas in a saucepan and cover well with water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes.
Fry the bacon in a frypan then remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Add the onion to the bacon fat and fry a few minutes until transparent. Add the carrots and fry 5-7 minutes more.
After 30 minutes, add the carrots, bacon, onions, salt, pepper, bay leaves and potatoes to the split peas. Simmer 20 more minutes until the potatoes are cooked.
Remove the bay leaves and let rest off the heat 10 minutes, then serve garnished with dill.
