Gift Shaped Cake

    A special birthday cake for the special person in your life! It takes a little time to prepare but is easy enough nonetheless.

    Makes: 1 cake

    • Plain Cake
    • 4 eggs, separated
    • pinch salt
    • 125g caster sugar
    • 60g butter, melted
    • 100g flour
    • Chocolate Cake
    • 4 eggs, separated
    • pinch salt
    • 100g caster sugar
    • 60g butter, melted
    • 50g cocoa
    • 100g flour
    • To Arrange
    • 3 tablespoons Nutella(TM)
    • Chocolate Icing
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 200g dark chocolate

    1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
    2. Plain Cake: Beat the egg whites with 1 pinch salt until stiff.
    3. In a food processor, beat sugar and egg yolks until frothy. Add melted butter and half the flour. Gently fold in half the whites. Add remaining flour and finally remaining whites.
    4. Evenly distribute the batter over the lined baking tray to a thickness of about 1cm. Bake 7 minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately cover with a damp tea towel.
    5. Let cool and cut the cake into 6 evenly-sized squares.
    6. Chocolate Cake Repeat these directions to make the chocolate layer of the cake, combining the cocoa and flour.
    7. Chocolate Icing: Combine the butter and chocolate in a microwave and melt.
    8. To Arrange: Alternately layering plain and chocolate cake squares, gluing them together with Nutella. When finished, trim any rough edges with a sharp knife to make a cube.
    9. Spread the chocolate icing over the sides of the cake and let cool. Decorate with ribbons, bows or coloured icing.
