We bake this biscuit recipe for Valentine's Day each year. My mother started the tradition of the biscuits when I was small, now I can't imagine a Valentine's Day without them.


Serves: 35 

  • 200g flour
  • 90g icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 lemon, zested
  • 125g cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg yolk
  • red and pink red sugar sprinkles

  1. In a bowl add the flour, icing sugar, vanilla, salt and lemon zest then mix. Cut in the butter and egg yolks quickly using 2 knives.
  2. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap then put in the fridge for least 1 hour to cool.
  3. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  4. Get the chilled dough from the refrigerator. Roll out the dough to a 1 cm thickness on a lightly floured board. Cut out hearts in different sizes.
  5. Place the hearts on the prepared tray the sprinkle with red and pink red sprinkles.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven on the middle rack for 9-12 minutes or until the cookies are lightly browned.
