Italian Easter Biscuits

This biscuits are typical in Southern Italy for Easter. You can cut out shapes or braid them, which is more traditional.


Serves: 8 

  • 400g flour
  • 180g sugar
  • 1 packet yeast
  • pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 eggs
  • 60g butter
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • milk, as needed
  • 1 egg, for brushing
  • 100s and 1000s, to decorate

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast and salt.
  2. Add vanilla, eggs, butter and zest and mix to make a pastry. If too dry, add a little milk to make smooth.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge 1/2 hour. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  4. Roll out the dough to 1cm thickness and cut out biscuits. Alternatively you can braid them - cut out 1cm strips and twist together.
  5. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with 100s and 1000s. Bake in preheated oven 12 minutes in the case of cut out biscuits or 16 minutes for braids.
