A fun meal for children at Halloween, homemade tomato soup with a scary spider web of cream. If the web does not work out first time, simply stir it into the soup and start again.

Serves: 4

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 onion, halved and sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 2 (800g) tins peeled tomatoes with liquid
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • black pepper, to taste
  • red chilli flakes, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • sour cream, creme fraiche or cream, to decorate

Preparation:20min  ›  Cook:20min  ›  Ready in:40min

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a saucepan. Cook onions and garlic on low heat for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the tomatoes with liquid, water, salt, pepper, chilli flakes, celery seeds, oregano and sugar. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, covered, 15 minutes.
  3. Puree the soup with a hand blender and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  4. Pour soup into bowls. Put the cream into a freezer bag and snip off a corner. Use the bag to paint a spiral of cream on each bowl of soup.
  5. With a knife, draw lines from the centre of the spiral to the edge to make the spider web effect.
