Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute more.
Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano and bay leaf. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally until thickened, about 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
