These started off as hot cross buns but we didn't have half the ingredients... So we got creative!

Serves: 4 

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon yeast
  • 3 cups diced apples
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon water

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. Put the diced apples in a pot with the nutmeg, mixed spice, cinnamon, sugar, water and oil. Bring to the boil then remove from heat when apples are soft and brown. Set aside.
  3. In a separate pot heat the milk until almost boiled. Set aside and leave to cool for approx. 15 minutes or until warm.
  4. Put the flour and salt in a large bowl and make a well in the centre.
  5. When the milk is cooled down a bit add the yeast and leave in a warm place until foamy.
  6. Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and knead until elasticy. Leave to rise until double its size.
  7. When risen add half of apple mixture, knead well until dough springs back lightly when touched.
  8. Separate into balls and fill with remaining apple mixture.
  9. Bake for twenty minutes.
