A very easy recipe, made in minutes and tastes really good. My grandchildren love it!

Serves: 4

  • 4 to 6 slices of thickly slices bread (I use wholemeal) and cut crusts off if they are a bit hard but I leave them on if soft enough
  • Generous sprinkling of nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon soft brown sugar or honey
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 handfuls sultanas
  • approx 1 pint milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine

Preparation:10min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:40min

  1. Turn oven on to 180C.
  2. Grease a baking dish (approx 21cm x 16cm) with butter.
  3. Cube the bread slices and place in buttered dish.
  4. Sprinkle over sultanas, nutmeg, sugar or drizzle with the honey.
  5. Beat eggs in a jug and pour in enough milk to make 2 cups (1 pint) and blend with a fork.
  6. Pour the egg and milk over the bread in the dish and press down lightly all over with a fork to combine.
  7. Dot with butter.
  8. Place dish in oven on middle shelf and bake for approx half an hour until puffed up and golden brown.
  9. Serve hot or cold, plain or with cream or ice cream.

I had some sourdough bread to use up, so based my pudding recipe on this one. I omitted the butter, and instead of dried fruit used fresh figs and nectarine slices on top. Used maple syrup instead of honey or sugar. Was lovely! - 13 Feb 2016

My husband and I really enjoyed it. I used raisin bread and cooked it in the microwave on high for 10 minutes and it worked out really well. Thanks for sharing - 23 Aug 2014
